Comment: I'm proud to live in the town where the concept of nationhood and democracy was born, and to have portrayed Abbot Bernard de Linton (author of the Declaration of Arbroath) in the Arbroath Abbey Pageant. How many of our American cousins realise this document gave rise to their own Declaration of Independence and that the ruins of the abbey in which it was penned still dominate the town? As well as Edinburgh and St Andrews, Arbroath should be on the itinerary of any American visitor to Scotland.

After going to a family reunion where one person wore a kilt instead of a tuxedo I realised that I also had a reason never to wear a cumberband ever again. Since then I've always worn a kilt on the most formal occasions and always with good results. It's always pleasant to wear a kilt.
