Golfers Flock to Carnoustie Country for the 2010 Tartan Day International Golf Challenge

Issued: 7 April 2010

The start of the fourth Tartan Day International Golf Challenge at Montrose on Monday (5 April) signals the start of another packed golfing season for Carnoustie Country.

Angus Council golf spokesperson David May was on hand to witness the 21 Chinese golfers tee off at Royal Montrose's Medal Course.

"The Carnoustie Country courses are hosting a whole range of professional and amateur golf events in 2010," said councillor May.

"As well as the international executives playing in Carnoustie Country this week, next month's annual Carnoustie Country Classic will once again bring over a hundred amateur golfers to this neck of the woods for a four day stay and play tournament.

"And the area will get another boost in July when the 2010 Senior Open Championship will be played in Carnoustie for the first time."

Councillor May said all of the golf events helped build the area's reputation as a great golf destination. "The council's working with golf clubs and the accommodation sector to attract more golfers and make it easier for them when they get here. The quality and affordability of the courses is a big attraction but we can improve the stay and play golf experience by working together better.

"That's why the council has set up a new Golf Industry Liaison Group that brings together the various interested parties. This more integrated approach should be a win win for everyone – courses, clubs and the hospitality sector."
