Tartan Day Angus - What’s On!
Issued: 2 March 2010
With the full calendar of Tartan Day Angus events now available, there will be a host of different ways for the people of Angus to join in with the week of celebrations, which starts on Friday, April 2 with an eagerly-awaited concert in Montrose - The Kilt Is Our Delight.
In Forfar, Tartan Day Scotland, which is sponsored by GlaxoSmithKline, will host The Great Haggis Hunt. From Saturday, April 3 until Saturday, April 10, haggis hunters at Forfar Loch will be able to track down Scotland's most elusive creatures before they leave for their summer holidays!
On Sunday, April 4, Glamis Castle will see history come to life when a knight from the retinue of Sir John Lyon, who was given the castle by King Robert II in the 14th century, tells his tale. Performances will take place in the castle grounds throughout the day, with the castle open from 10am until 6pm.
As part of the Tartan Day celebrations, on Tartan Day itself - Tuesday, April 6 - The Angus Archives, which are in the grounds of Restenneth Priory, are holding an open day. Members of the public will be able to study the Angus Archives' unique and fascinating collection of local and family history resources, including school log books, poor relief registers and kirk session records.
On Wednesday, April 7, Crombie Country Park near Monikie will provide the setting for the first Walk Weekly for Health. This 30-minute walk will combine the health benefits of walking with a host of information about Crombies' social history and native wildlife, and, in recognition of Tartan Day 2010, will have a 'tartan twist'.
The Tartan Quiz Night will be held on the evening of Thursday, April 8, at Carnoustie's Aboukir Hotel. Teams of four will fight it out in a battle of general knowledge – and there may well be a few questions with a distinctly Scottish theme! The losing teams will be able to brush up on their Scottish history the next evening, when top Scottish stand-up comedian Bruce Fummey performs his very funny show, 'A Concise History of Scotland' at The Plough Inn in Forfar.
"The Tartan Day Angus 2010 calendar is packed full of very special events," said the Provost of Angus, Ruth Leslie Melville. "In fact, the celebrations continue right up to the very end of the week. All the family are catered for, from the Forfar and Area Pipe Band playing at The Cross in Forfar on Saturday, April 10, to a Sunday yomp marching from Arbroath's InchapePark to Easthaven to raise funds for Afghan Heroes. I'd encourage you to look at the event programme or website to find something that appeals to you."
